Carmen Carrera See Through Posing Shots
So it was always going to be hard for anyone else to stand out at The Blonds New York Fashion Week show afterparty on Wednesday night. The following day, on June 12, 2022, TLC announced that “Bar Mitzvah, Beads & Oh Baby!” had been pulled from rotation indefinitely, with the network planning to re-edit the episode for future broadcasts.
Carrera was in a domestic partnership with Adrian Torres from 2009, but she announced in 2022 that they had separated. By 2022, the two had reunited, receiving relationship counseling while being filmed for the Couples Therapy television show. After being featured in a Gilead Sciences ad titled “Red Ribbon Runway” with fellow Drag Race co-stars Manila Luzon, Delta Work, Shangela Laquifa Wadley, and Alexis Mateo, the dress she wore was auctioned by Logo in commemoration of World AIDS Day. COVID has helped me realize that I’m not the only one, I’m not alone in this. We have so many community members that also have amazing voices and amazing stories, and that’s why I started CC3 Entertainment, which is a digital marketing agency.
I know that those people still remember me and I feel like I’m carrying so many people’s voices and experiences with me for a reason. I have a tendency to put myself last, but I do practice that gratitude. The fact that doors have opened up and there have been a lot of serendipitous moments in my life, that really makes me feel that our stories really matter and that I have to keep going and stay healthy and take care of myself. Because before that, it was always just about exploiting us for the surgery aspect or the transformation aspect, but it was not really about history being made or giving the voice to a trans person. My friends were pushing me to go on Drag Race, and I said, “Okay,” but I was battling with my gender. I became obsessed; I would only think about going out there and just trying to find my way.
- It was a culture shock, because I wasn’t used to people being so free and open.
- I think there are a lot more qualities that go into it that just genitals.
- It just really piqued my interest, and since I was already in college studying photography, it was perfect, because it helped me to photograph these amazing people and get to know them on a personal level.
- I just thought, “Wow, there’s so much more to this community than I had ever been exposed to, or even thought about.”
Carrera was featured in the work of photographer David LaChapelle. She posed for a poster for Life Ball, which has two versions; each depicts her with different genitalia to represent the blurring of gender identity. In 2022, Carrera was included as part of the Advocate’s annual “40 under 40” list and made a cameo appearance on Jane the Virgin’s premier episode. I know there are folks that are still watching me since the first time that I went out to the Village and I made friends.
